Sir Francis Drake Essays - Francis Drake, Tudor England, Drake
Sir Francis Drake Sir Francis Drake was born in 1540. He was an English sea captain, navigator, and politician of the Elizabethan era. Elizabeth I of England gave Drake knighthood in 1581. He was second-in-command of the English fleet against the Spanish Armada in 1588. He was also the second man to successfully sail around the world. At age twenty-three, Drake made his first voyage to the New World. He sailed with his second cousin, Sir John Hawkins. In 1572 Drake took off on his first major expedition. He planned an attack on the Isthmus of Panama, which was the place where the silver and gold treasure of Peru had to be sent overland to the Caribbean Sea by the Spanish. His first raid was in July 1572. Drake and his men captured the town and its treasure. Drake?s men insisted on retreating when they noticed that he was bleeding from a wound. Drake stayed in the area for almost a year, raiding Spanish shipping and trying to capture a treasure shipment. Eventually in 1573 Drake and his crew attacked a Spanish mule train and discovered that they had captured nearly 20 tons of silver and gold. With the success of this Panama Isthmus raid, Elizabeth I of England sent Drake to start an expedition against the Spanish along the Pacific coast of the Americas. In 1579 Drake captured a Spanish ship carrying 80 pounds of gold and 26 tons of silver. This would be his most profitable capture. Drake would later go on to port in southern California before going west back to England. He left several men to keep this port secret from the Spanish, and to establish a small colony. He claimed California for England, and ultimately began the colonization of California. Of course nowadays, California is a very profitable and important state here in the US. We owe its origins to Sir Francis Drake.

American History X - Nurturing Hate essays
American History X - Nurturing Hate essays Derek Vinyard, the central character in the movie American History X, is a naturally violent person whose upbringing and environment have increased his tendency to be violent. All people, by nature, are violent, but the degree to which they express their violence is determined by outside factors such as their surroundings, family dynamics, and the things they were taught while growing up.How I interpret [a] situation will determine my readiness to strike back in hostility. . . or to simply smile and accept an apology? (May 184). All people have different interpretations of similar situations and the determining factor of how they react in these situations is dependent on previous influences in their lives, as we can see with Derek, who's reactions to certain circumstances are that of a person who has been blinded to act a specific way towards people unlike himself. We can see the effect of an authority figure on Derek through a drastic change in his attitude towards black people. During the flashback where Derek, his father, and the rest of the family are at dinner, Derek is trying to defend Dr. Sweeney and the black literature course he teaches while his father gets more and more violent with his words about how he feels towards black people and their culture. In this time of Derek's life he is still very young and easily influenced, especially since he looks up to and respects his father very much. If the events are followed chronologically, the next scene is that of Derek talking with a reporter after his father was shot by black gang members. Here, Derek is a completely different character than the one we saw at the dinner table. His whole attitude towards black people has changed because he has accepted what his father said as true and is now expressing the emotions that come with feelings of hate. From this point on, we see Derek's hate for black people grows not on its own, but with the nurture of Cameron.[Cameron] [is] a vil...

Aging - Research Paper Example Aging refers to the biological process of growing old and developing physical characteristics that are associated with old age (Oswald, Jopp, Rott & Wahl, 2011, p 239). Aging is a multidisciplinary phenomenon that encompasses studies from various fields such as biology, genetics, sociology and psychology. Aging can also refer to the individualââ¬â¢s change in roles and responsibilities such as roles towards the family and society. Another meaning of aging is the physical changes that reduce the efficiency of body organ systems such as heart, blood circulation system and lungs. This occurs due to decline in rate of cell replications as an individual gets older (Oswald, Jopp, Rott & Wahl, 2011, p 245). Gerontological nursing refers to the study of the aging processes as individuals progress from middle age to later life. Gerontology studies the mental, physical and social changes associated with older people and changes in social policies aimed at taking care of the aged population (Scheibe & Carstensen, 2010, p 143). Gerontology nursing applies to community nursing through integrating advanced knowledge and skills in delivering quality and safe health care to the aged in the community. The branch of nursing focuses on health screening, counseling, and crisis intervention in order to provide quality care to older people (Oswald, Jopp, Rott & Wahl, 2011, p 248). According to U.S Census Bureau statistics released in 2010, the countryââ¬â¢s age composition changed greatly between 2000 and 2010. Individuals aged between 45 to 65 years increased by 31.5 percent and accounts for about 26.4 of the total population. The number of Americans aged 65 years and above numbered 40,267,984 in 2010 and represented almost 12.4percent of the total population (Oswald, Jopp, Rott & Wahl, 2011, p 248). Accordingly, the aged individuals increased by 15.3 percent or 5.4 million citizens since 2010. Surprisingly, there were 53, 364 people aged more than 100 years. Target goals of Healthy People 2010 aims at reducing tooth loss, ensuring the aged receive flu vaccine every year and ensuring 90 percent of adults aged 65 years and older receive pneumonia vaccine. Accordingly, the target goals aim at getting colorectal cancer screening at the age of 50 years and ensuring 70 percent of women receive a mammogram at the age of 40 years. The targets aim at preventing falling through ensuring the aged citizens have healthy bones, increasing leisure and ensuring the aged increase intake of fruits and vegetables (Scheibe & Carstensen, 2010, p 143). There are numerous community issues affecting the elderly population. One of the issues affecting elderly people is poverty since majorities of these individuals depend on social security benefits. Another issue affecting this group is high risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart related diseases. The elderly also suffer from sensory impairments and poor oral health problems such as vision impairment, hear ing impairment and loss of tooth. Other issues include lack of adequate access to vaccinations, poor diet quality, inadequate physical activity, obesity, inadequate physical activity and cigarette smoking behaviors (Scheibe & Carstensen, 2010, p 144). Community nursing practices must offer quality and safe nursing care to the elderly through carrying out an assessment of nursing needs. The assessment phase must collect data about each elderly person, the disease symptoms, surrounding environment such as close family members, access to recreational facilities and income level of the elderly person (Wick, 2010, p 121).

Discriminate Between Intrapreneurship and Entrepreneurship Assignment
Discriminate Between Intrapreneurship and Entrepreneurship - Assignment Example This discussion highlights that intrapreneurs act inside the organization, fighting for changing and renewing the system. They are considered to be the revolutionaries present with the systems of the company. This may even initiate some kind of conflict with the company and therefore factors such as respect must be used for channeling these conflicts and transforming them into some kind of positive aspect for the company. The resources of the company are used by the intrapreneurs for implementation of opportunities; however there are several objectives highlighting the fact why intrapreneurship is considered to be so difficult to be implemented within an existing company. From the report it is clear that both entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship involves defining and recognizing opportunities. Both of these concepts take into account unique business ideas which take the form of a product, service or process by the end. Entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship are driven by one or two i ndividuals who then work with the team of people for bringing the concept into practical life. These concepts also require the balance between vision and management skills, reactiveness with patience and passion with pragmatism. Entrepreneurship as well as intrapreneurship involves concepts that are considered vulnerable in formative stages and therefore requires adaption with time. Both these concepts are known for entailing a window of opportunity for the firm within which the entrepreneur is successfully capitalizing upon.
